Nonprofit Business Start-Up Grants-Government Grants For Nonprofit Organizations
Most start-up businesses have a tough time finding grants to assist them, because the federal government does not provide start-up grants to for-profit businesses. But for start-up non-profits, the story is different. Both the federal government and private foundations offer grant money to help non-profit businesses establish themselves.
Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants
The National Endowment for Humanities offers the Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program to foster the growth of the digital humanities field. Grants are designed to support the planning stages of projects to promote and explore new media and digital technologies in the humanities discipline. Non-profits are encouraged to apply; the NEH also requests applicants to submit proposals that are innovative and risk-taking. Up to $50,000 is awarded for each project.

Heineman Foundation
The Heineman Foundation offers grants to start-up projects in specific areas of interest. All recipients must be registered as 501(c)3 non-profit organizations. Preference is given to applicants in Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New York and North Carolina; though organizations in other states may apply, their chances for a grant from the foundation are slim.
Eligible project areas include programs to enable economically disadvantaged women to enter the workforce; programs supporting music, science and literature; programs that encourage youths to think creatively; research into the prevention and treatment of childhood illness; and research to reduce or eliminate water degradation. Grants range from $20,000 to $50,000 annually for three to five years.

RGK Foundation
The RGK Foundation encourages start-up non-profits to apply for its grant program. The foundation awards grants in the fields of education, community, and medicine/health. It supports educational programs for K-12 education and higher literacy, community programs including community improvement, abuse prevention and youth development, and medicine and health programs that promote children's health and improved medical access for all. The program has no geographical restrictions, though from international organizations it accepts only solicited proposals.
